Letter from our new CEO, Don DeLoach
I am pleased to be writing to you today in my new role as President and CEO of Infobright. While I have been here just a few weeks now, I am truly impressed with the quality and innovation of the product, the team, and certainly of the customers. I have been involved with platform technology most of my career, and one thing I learned long ago is that smart, creative customers are forever defining innovative uses and carving incredibly cool paths for the evolution of technology. No technology company can exist in a vacuum. In that regard, I find the open source world particularly compelling. It is an environment defined by community, collaboration, and innovation.
By way of a brief background, I have been a CEO in the software business for over 10 years. The last eight were with the Complex Event Processing company Aleri, which was acquired by Sybase. (As a side note, you may be aware Sybase recently announced their own sale to SAP after the deal with Aleri. Technology is truly an interesting business). Prior to that I was with a CRM company called Youcentric from 1999 to the beginning of 2002 that was acquired by JD Edwards. Before that I held various executive and management roles at Sybase.

Announcing Infobright Enterprise Edition 3.4 – 500% Query Performance improvement, 1600% Delete Performance improvement and Query While Load/DML
Infobright is please to announce the release of Infobright Enterprise Edition (IEE) 3.4. This new release includes a number of major product extensions that boost performance for queries and DML functions, especially for analytics involving large volumes of data. Release 3.4 will be generally available in June.
Major new features include:
- Workload Management: Faster Queries, Faster Deletes, Faster DML
Infobright’s new workload manager now utilizes all available resources including CPUs and memory to optimize the order of data access, and rapidly decompress and read data in parallel with query execution. This advancement has demonstrated query performance increases of 40-500%. The workload management system also provides the ability for multiple concurrent queries to be balanced over all system resources.
Enhancements to insert/update/delete processing have also had a dramatic impact on performance. As shown in the table below, delete performance has been improved by over 1600% while tests of insert/update/delete show improvement up to 1000%.
In keeping with Infobright’s focus on simplicity and ease of use, these new capabilities help companies scale performance without the need to implement costly, complex MPP hardware infrastructure.
Results of Performance Tests
Performance Test | Average Improvement Results | Single user scenarios, aggregate and non-aggregate queries | 40 – 50% | Multi-user query performance for 4 and 8 user scenarios | 500% | Single-user DML performance | 300 – 1000% | Multi-user DML high commit scenarios (multiple interleaved inserts, updates and deletes | 300 – 600% | Single user DELETE performance | 1670% |
- Query While Load/DML, Load While Query /DML
For businesses such as mobile providers and online retailers, up-to-the-minute insight into what customers are doing—how they are responding to location-specific offers or what they are adding to their shopping cart, for example—is critical to competitive advantage. Even a small delay can mean the difference between making or losing a sale. To ensure faster access to information, IEE 3.4 includes the ability to execute queries while data is still loading. When a LOAD or DML process completes, the new data is immediately available for analytics, enabling business users to load and query concurrently. This is especially important for web, mobile, security, network management and other types of applications that capture data in real-time
- Enhanced Internationalization
In today’s global business environment, more and more companies need support for multi-language data. IEE 3.4 expands the solution’s already extensive international capabilities with the following additional capabilities:
- The ability to load UTF-8 data via the Infobright high-speed loader
- Support for exporting UTF-8 data
- The ability to convert current ASCII tables to UTF-8.
To reduce the wait time for users, large results sets are now streamed to the client, rather than waiting for the full query to execute. This provides faster return of data and will lower the memory footprint for most non-aggregate and aggregate queries. It also benefits ISVs and SaaS providers who embed IEE within their application or service. |

Along with the growth of software-as-a-service and the use of packaged applications is significant growth in the amount of data being captured by these applications. In addition, customers want access to the detailed data being captured for analytic capabilities that extend beyond standard reporting and business intelligence.
This requirement, coupled with increasing data volume, often presents challenges to software and SaaS developers who want to deliver high performance reporting and analytics, with user flexibility and low cost. The selection of the database to store and query this data is a key consideration in terms of meeting customer requirements. |

Letter from Don, Continued...
I hope to bring to Infobright a continued focus on innovation and attention to customer success. While I want us to grow and prosper, I want to balance what can be profitable with what is right (and in the end, I don’t even really see that as a balancing effort). Although I have indeed spent my career in software, I have become more and more critical over the years of the over-selling and hype that often comes with software vendors. I believe life is too short that kind of behavior, and would prefer we deal straight with customers and prospects, employees and investors. I will admit, for some companies, the hype seems to work. Again, I would rather see us steer you to a competitive offering than mislead you into using Infobright when you should not. I believe that in the long run, everyone is better served by that approach.
And that brings me back to customer dialog and innovation. We will only prosper by delivering products and services that people and organizations want. The simplest, most straightforward way to do that is by maintaining an ongoing dialog and truly listening. We should listen to the accolades. We should listen to the criticism. We should listen to the wish list. Then we should act, refine, and repeat the process, because with products like ours, we are never done. That’s part of what makes it so much fun.
I have seen where we were, where we are today (and in particular with the 3.4 release), and where we are going. It is indeed an exciting story that only gets better. I look forward to the future, and to the ongoing dialog. I would invite you to engage our forums, read our blogs, follow us on twitter (company is “infobright”, and my personal ID is “deloach7kw”), or email me directly at don.deloach@infobright.com.
All the best,
Don |
